build your own 'Titanic' from Taschen

With the centenary of this famous ship's maiden voyage and sinking coming up next month, there will be plenty of activities surrounding it (we'll do a post near the time).  German publisher Taschen have produced a 1:200 scale build your own from cardboard cutouts published as a book, available for about 10 Euros, which is a lot cheaper (if less attractive) than a custom-built precision model.  The Wellington Maritime Museum used to have an impressive model of the sinking ship on display, but it seems this is among the scandalous disposals of the so-called Wellington Museums Trust.

It may come as no surprise to learn that a few years ago I was asked to supply some of my postcards of the Blue Star Line to the shop manager at the time (2007) and most sold. I went back a year later to find that person had moved on and a new shop manger said "no, we would only stock NZ related items!" Now as you would know, many Kiwi's served with British Companies which traded here ,even ahd ships named after NZ places and cities, the list is endless, most of the NZ companies had their vessels built in UK yards, so all of sudden its just a Kiwi theme. They are dipsticks, if they read their maritime history they may learn something but its all geared to what looks nice for what is basically a barn with a few videos and artefacts. I understand over 10,000 items/treasures are stored just outside Wellington gathering dust and out of sight. Bloody pathetic if you ask me.

regards,
Wallace

From our long experience, whenever regular orders from an outlet cease, it invariably means that a good retail manager has left and been replaced with someone hopeless and that's certainly the case with the WMT.
Fortunately the reverse sometimes happens, too.
