As those who have our books know, the new Palmerston North deviation and station on the west side of town, replacing the the line through the town centre, was opened on 21 October 1963. This shows what was reported to be the first train to arrive, hauled by a JA steamer. Today the tracks are electrified but otherwise there isn't much difference.
