Virginian Railway EL-2B locomotive pair

These (B+B-B+B)+(B+B-B+B) or (Bo′Bo′)(Bo′Bo′)+(Bo′Bo′)(Bo′Bo′) type were built at G.E.'s Erie works in 1948, the largest two-unit electric locomotives used in North America. They were powered by 11 kV, 25 Hz ACweighed 1,000,000 pounds (450 tons), were 150 feet 8 inches (45.92 metres) long, and had an output 6,800 horsepower with a top speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). The locomotives were used on the 133-mile (214 km) electrified portion of the line from Roanoke, Virginia to Mullens, West Virginia. They were retired and sold for scrap shortly after the 1959 merger of the Virginian with the Norfolk and Western. None of the four were preserved.
