A new book of classic North American railroad scenes

It's been a long time since we mentioned a new book other than our own, so here's one we recommend.

From Kalmbach, the publishers of Trains magazine, Classic Railroad Scenes presents over 100 color pictures of railroading history from the 1940s to the early 1970s. It comprises train subjects in everyday settings -- offering a detailed view of railroading during the Classic and Transition eras.  They are all one to one side of a double-page landscape format spread (nothing across the gutter) with a detailed description on the facing page.

The subjects include streetcars/trolleys, steam and diesel trains of major fallen flag railroads, in a variety of settings: large cities, small towns, and rural areas throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The author comments it has been compiled from his own extensive collection of slides, from the sound of it, acquired from estate sales, and says for that reason many are anonymous as there was no name on the mounts -- we know the problem.

The choice of scenes is impressive and the production standard is high.

224 pages in 11 x 8.5" format, a choice of hardcover (RRP of $US 40) and softcover ($US 28).
