launching of the LMS steamer 'Duke of York', Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1935


The TSS (twin-screw turbine steamer) Duke of York was built by Harland and Wolff and was launched by the LMS on 7 March 1935 at the Queen's Island shipyard. She was operated on the Heysham to Belfast route until she became a troop transport vessel during WW2. She was involved in the ill-fated Dieppe raid of August 1942.  The ship survived the war and was moved to the Harwich-Hook of Holland route after nationalisation in 1948.
