and now the Catalans want a vote on independence from Spain

a big display of Catalan nationalism in Barcelona yesterday
There's nothing new about the movement to break away which goes back at least to the 1960s. Catalonia is an autonomous region of Spain with a population of 7.5 million and accounts for about a fifth of Spain’s GDP, thus rather more important to Spain than Scotland is to the UK.  Catalans have their own dialect which is an official language in Spain (the main Spanish language is known as Castilian). The historic area also includes a small chunk of south-western France although interest there in a Catalan state is minimal and virtually no-one there speaks Catalan as a first language.  More here

The same observations on Scottish independence apply.
