Photos taken after the reporting of the Great Train Robbery in which an overnight Glasgow to London Euston Royal Mail train was stopped and robbed by 15 men who took 120 sacks containing £2.6 million (about £42 million in today's value) in banknotes. The train driver was coshed and suffered afterwards.
The top pic is at the nearby station of Cheddington, the second at Bridego Bridge, the actual scene of the robbery. Last year a two-part telemovie A Robber's Tale/A Copper's Tale was shown on the BBC for the 50th anniversary, which we watched on cable.
The movie shows a preserved 37 class, which looks similar, although filmed on a double track non-electrified line rather than the actual 4-track electrified line. Despite these inaccuracies, the movies were well made. More actual pics are on this webpage.
