VR Class Dr12, Finland

With a passing resemblance to Western Australia's X class (see earlier post), this was a class of 42 Co-Co type diesel electrics which entered service between 1959 and 1963, built by 2 manufacturers: Valmet and Lokomo, both based in Tampere. Those with even road numbers were produced by Valmet, and odd numbers by Lokomo. With an 1800 hp or 1320 kW prime mover they were underpowered with poor acceleration and the 20.3 tonne axle load wasn't good for lightweight track. They were all withdrawn by the end of 1990. This one was seen in Helsinki in 1978.  Two are preserved.
