Blue Mountains fires damage rail infrastructure, NSW

The bush fire season began early this year in NSW with some occurring last month.  The latest fires in the Blue Mountains have affected one of Australia's more scenic railway routes west of Mt Victoria, details on this webpage.

Not only has the main line been affected, millions of dollars worth of damage has been done to the historic Zig Zag railway just east of Lithgow. Ten carriages, accommodation carriages, historic sleeping carriages, a meeting room, workshop, office and sleepers were ruined by a fire. The tourist attraction has been closed since June last year for safety upgrades and had been close to reopening. It could now be up to a year before it is ready to carry passengers again.
