Southern Pacific GP60

One of 195 of this model that Southern Pacific and its St Louis Southwestern Railway subsidiary bought. Probably the last 4 axle Bo-Bo type diesel-electric locomotive from EMD, the GP60 was built between 1985 and 1994 and classified by EMD as a third-generation locomotive as it utilized a trio of microprocessors which monitored and managed several engine, cooling system and control functions. The microprocessors replaced hundreds of wiring circuits, dozens of relays and all but one module card.

The prime mover is a 16-cylinder 710G3A diesel engine, rated at 3,800 horsepower (2,800 kW).

The GP60 series shared the same frame as the GP59. Cabless GP60B units were bought exclusively by the Santa Fe. Units built with a comfort/safety cab and a wide nose were designated GP60M and likewise all purchased by the Santa Fe. A total of 294 GP60, 23 GP60B and 63 GP60M units were built. GP stood for 'general purpose' but American railroads now see powerful six-axle road units as the way to go.

Length: 59 feet 9 inches (18.21 metres); fuel tank 3,700 US gallons (14,000 litres)
