the Woolworths free bus, Masterton

During the 1990s, Woolworths Supermarkets (now Countdown) in Masterton sponsored this once weekly free service for shoppers in the town. This was obviously a good boost for their own business and was well used, as shown. However, by 1999 it was decided to curtail the free service as the town had a twice daily commercial service operated by the Wellington Regional Council using Tranzit buses. This has now increased to a set Monday to Friday service. Here passengers from the Masterton Masonic Retirement Home old and young, board the last free service on Tranzit coach 211, a 24 seater 1983 Isuzu with a 3,856 cc engine, in March 1999.
