3rd rail electrification on the Maurienne line, France

As mentioned in other posts, the Maurienne line (between Chambery and Modane) is part of the international arterial route between Lyon in France and Turin in Italy. This steep line was electrified with a third rail on the side in 1500 V DC between 1925 and 1930. For the engineers of the time, it was only a trial: it was thought that the installation and monitoring would be easier than overhead catenary. Because of this line's high traffic and gradient, the cost of such equipment proved to be of the same order as overhead equipment with a high power feeder section parallel to the catenary. However, the need to install overhead lines in stations because of the multiplicity of turnouts and the constraints of track maintenance due to the presence at ground level of a current of 1500 V DC led to the abandonment of the 3rd rail system for subsequent electrification.

A sub-series of 21 of the CC 6500 class electric locomotives was specially equipped with 3rd rail current collectors on the Maurienne line.

The 3rd rail was abandoned in 1976 and replaced with normal catenary.
