Philadelphia elevated railroad early views

The Market–Frankford Subway–Elevated Line (MFSE), El, or Blue Line) was opened on 4 March 1907 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is today operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). As the full name indicates, it runs both above ground on elevated track and below ground.  The route is 12.9 miles (20.76 km) and has two tracks in the unusual gauge of 5 ft 2 1⁄2 in (1,588 mm), the Pennsylvania trolley gauge, powered by 700 Volts DC from third rail.

Prior to 1936, the original Market-Frankford Line trackage between 15th and 13th Street stations separated and looped around the foundation of City Hall (eastbound trains around the south side returning to be westbound trains from the north side).  Since then it has been in a tunnel.
