The Hindustan Ambassador - the Indian car



One of these is sure to appear in any travelogue of India on TV as it is the standard Indian taxicab, as well as being widely used by others, including Government ministers. The Hindustan Ambassador first appeared in India in 1958, made by Hindustan Motors in West Bengal and based on the Morris Oxford III produced in Britain from 1956-1959. It has been in production since 1958 with only minor modifications and changes! In popular parlance it is called the 'Amby'.
