the cruise liner 'Costa Concordia' crashes into a rock off the Italian island of Giglio and overturns

Rock is still embedded in the hull.

Given that this ship has only been in service since mid-2006 and equipped with ultra-modern navigation equipment, this shipwreck in calm conditions is most mysterious. The captain has been arrested, or to be euphemistic, 'detained for questioning'.  At the time of writing there are 3 confirmed fatalities and about 40 missing.  More pics here
