the Muslim Brotherhood explodes a bomb in the Cairo Christian cathedral, kills 25

A bomb exploded about 10 a.m. Sunday morning 11 December -- marking the Prophet Mohammed's birthday this year -- in Cairo’s Abbasiyya Cathedral, leaving at least 25 dead and at least 10 wounded.

According to a Coptic Church official, the explosion took place in a small church, the church of St Peter and St Paul, which is attached to the Coptic Cathedral.

Security sources speaking to Egypt’s state media say that at least 12 kilograms of explosives were located inside the church. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate the majority of those killed are women and children.

On Friday, an explosion in Giza killed six police officers, while another in Kafr El Sheikh left one citizen dead.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the top Islamic authority in the country, condemned the attack in a statement released immediately after the attack. Egypt has cancelled all celebrations marking the Prophet’s Birthday while Egypt's President Sisi has declared three days of mourning.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has stated that the Cairo Cathedral terrorist attack was carried out by a 22-year-old suicide bomber.

“Yesterday, the whole night they [forensics] were gathering the body of Mahmoud Shafik Mohamed Mostafa. He is the one who did this with a suicide belt, not with a bag or anything else,” said President Sisi.

The Egyptian President added that four others, including a woman, were arrested by security forces for their involvement in the attack. Two other individuals are yet to be arrested but have been identified by security forces, said President Sisi. The names of the suspects were not announced by President Sisi.

President Sisi added that this is just the beginning and that Egypt will hit back hard against terrorism.
