naughty - Volkswagen uses software to fool EPA pollution tests

U.S. national and state air regulators, in a notice mailed to Volkswagen AG on Friday, accused the company of installing software in about half a million cars designed to pass federal emissions tests but release higher-than-acceptable levels in everyday driving situations.

In the violation notice, issued to the car company and subsidiaries Audi AG and Volkswagen Group of America Inc., U.S. EPA said the company built and installed these computer algorithms in approximately 482,000 diesel cars sold since 2008.

In the U.S. VW has only about a 3.5% market share, but that's still a lot of cars polluting the atmosphere.

Another interesting fact to emerge from this episode is that about half the cars in Europe are diesel-powered rather than gasoline powered.
