This steel arch bridge was opened in 1897 and spans New York state and Canada; it is 329 metres (1,079 ft) long and 69 metres (225 ft) above the water and has two decks: the upper deck carries the railway traffic while the lower deck is today reserved for passenger vehicles only; commercial vehicles and pedestrians are banned. Amtrak took over maintenance of the rail deck from Canadian National in late 2012 and currently only the
Maple Leaf uses the bridge; Canadian National no longer routes freight over it.
