10 years since the massive tsunami which devastated south-east Asia

It is the sort of news story which those living in and around the Pacific can't forget, even if this affected countries around the Indian Ocean. In local time it occurred in the morning of 26 December 2004 and is thus known as the Boxing Day Tsunami. A magnitude 9.1 earthquake approximately 160 km (100 miles) off the western coast of northern Sumatra, in the Indian Ocean just north of Simeulue island at a depth of 30 km (19 miles) below mean sea level sent a wall of water around the Indian Ocean which swept inland into the surrounding countries, causing an estimated death toll of 228,000 of which 170,000 was in Indonesia; one of the worst natural disasters in history.
