Built by Bethlehem Sparrows Point Shipyard in Maryland in 1973, this was one of the San Francisco (California) based Pacific Far East Line C7-S-88 series ships, all of whose names ended with Bear. The company went bankrupt in 1978 and the ships were sold to Sea-Land Service, Inc. This one, with an original grt of 23,673, is still operating under the name
Horizon Consumer.
Quite amazing she is still operating 40 years on , and an unusual configaration.
ReplyDeleteThe Horizon Consumer is sitting outside my office as we speak. It is a back up vessel for Horizon Lines when the main trade route vessels are in dry dock. I'm located in Anchorage, Alaska.
