Czernowitz station

Czernowitz is the German spelling of what is today Chernivtsi in the western Ukraine and this card probably dates from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before 1918.  In the interwar years it was part of Romania; in 1940 it was grabbed by Stalin whose border changes became permanent in 1945.  Before then this city had a real mix of nationalities: in 1930, the city reached a population of 112,400 of which 26.8% were Jews, 23.2% Romanians, 20.8% Germans, 18.6% Ukrainians, the remainder Poles and others.  Today the Jews, the Germans and most of the Romanians have gone, and 80% of the population are Ukrainians.
