transport etymology 6 - jetty

In the previous post, what most would call a wharf is described as a jetty, which is generally considered to be a small landing pier. The word is from the 15th century: French jetée, the past participle of the verb jeter "to throw". It was used originally both for a structure jutting out, "thrown", into a body of water, and for a projecting upper storey of a house, now only a technical term in architectural history.
