level crossing collision, NSW, 1954

The perennial problem of level crossings - or as they are called in North America, grade crossings - stupid motorists and truckers who disregard them. This is a photo showing a Sydney electric multiple unit in National Park, later called Royal National Park, derailed as a result of a vehicle colliding with it, despite the large signs stating that "red lights mean Train approaching" - how could anyone be so foolish as to disregard that?  Dated 18 June 1954.
