On 7 October 1948, Citroën unveiled the 2CV. It presented much new technological innovative solutions. It offered front wheel drive, a full independent suspension system, 4 doors, 3+overdrive transmission, a dual clutch setup (an ordinary clutch and a centrifugal clutch for city traffic). It had inertia (mass) dampers at each wheel, radial tyres and inboard front brakes. From 375cc, during its 42 year life span the engine grew to 602cc with numerous changes, but the basic principle and design remained the same.
After 3.8 million 2CV's were made, production ended in Portugal on 27 July 1990.
Also worth noting the 2CV was the first car designed around and released with radial ply tires, Citroen was owned by Michelin at that time.
