The Val Venosta railway ("Vinschgaubahn" in German) was opened on 1 July 1906 and remained in operation for 84 years. In 1990, the last train rolled through the Val Venosta valley until 1999, when the railway line became the property of the Province of South Tyrol and was completely renovated. On 5 May 2005, the first of the new colourful trains of the Val Venosta railway was dispatched to Malles. The length of the railway is 59.8 km and trains today reaches a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
The track runs along the Adige (Etsch) river in the Val Venosta. The stations along the track date back to the period of time between 1900 and 1906 and are consequently part of the cultural artefacts of South Tyrol. The restoration of the stations was performed in cooperation with the Provincial Antiquities and Monuments Office, striving for preserving their original flair.
