steamship 'Grotius' (1907)


The ship was named after Hugo de Groot, a lawyer (1583-1645). In the years 1917-1919 the ship was used in the Java Pacific Mail Service, the line from San Francisco, Honolulu, Yokohama, Nagasaki, Hong Kong, Singapore to Batavia and vice versa. Semarang on the east coast of Java and Surabaya were also visited. On 27 May 1931 the ship was towed to Simon's Metaalhandel NV Pernis where the superstructure of the ship was demolished. In November 1934 the ship was sold to NV Holland Scheepwerf & Machinehandel in HI Ambacht where scrapping was completed.
