Wairarapa Railcar near Orakei, Auckland, July 1936

A long way from its intended home route between Wellington and Palmerston North over the Rimutaka Incline, but this was being used for an inspection tour by the Minister of Railways and his party. This double track section was part of the 'Westfield Deviation' completed in 1930 to be the Main Trunk alternative to the existing line climbing to Newmarket and Remuera.
