NZR Ja 1284 heads a northbound goods train across MacKay's Crossing north of Paekakariki, circa 1959


This photo appeared in an NZ encyclopedia published by the Government Printing Office in 1960.

There have been a few changes since then: apart from the cessation of steam use this crossing is now double track, electrified and the State Highway has bypassed it with a 4-lane expressway opened in 2010.
