"It is early morning on a bright day in the early summer of 1957, against a backdrop of Conway Castle and the estuary of the River Conway, and 'Britannia' class 4-6-2 No. 70045, soon to be named Lord Rowallan, coasts into Llandudno Junction station with an express from Holyhead to London. On an adjacent track, Ivatt class '2' 2-6-0 No. 46447 departs for Llandudno Town to collect the daily pick-up freight.

"[Artist] Barry Freeman was born in Northampton in 1937. He spent ten years in the Royal Navy and subsequently several years in the electronics and aviation industry. Following this he took up teaching, drawing and painting before early retirement, allowing him to become a professional artist. Since childhood Barry has been an avid railway enthusiast and this, alongside his love for art, is reflected in the detailed paintings in which he now specialises. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1995 and is a former deputy president of the Guild of Railway Artists."
