An undated drawing of the 278 ft (85 metre) long S.S. Central America, which on 3 September 1857 with 477 passengers and 101 crew on board, left the Panamanian port of Colón and sailed for New York City. The ship was heavily laden with over three tons of gold and sank after sailing into a hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas -- the subject of much interest ever since. Info
