The regular passenger train from Napier to Wellington ceased in 2001. The train may, however, be the only way of experiencing the gorge as recently, following yet another large slip closing the road, the government announced it is investigating alternative routes to this section of the State Highway.
I feel the logical solution would be a road tunnel, avoiding any more serious weather related incidents and likely stronger than any bridge or flyover in case of earthquake.
ReplyDeleteI also feel money could well have gone into this more urgently than the Kapitu highway and Transmission Gully, the obiteration of Otaki east side has begun with all the craft houses removed on Rahui Road and Arlington House where the USA Generals stayed during when the troops were here in WW2 is not far away from being moved .I find the whole Road of national significant on Kapiti absurd , better rail links to Otaki would have been better but developers win and personally may well end up pushing us away from the district altogether.
