South African narrow gauge Garratt, 1973

In most countries 'narrow gauge' means less than 4 ft 8.5 inches (1435 mm), but in those such as South Africa where the national system is already less than that, it refers to a gauge that is less again. All the commercial 2 ft gauge lines in South Africa ceased operations in the 1990s and only a few tourist, agricultural and/or heritage railways survive. This is on the Port Elizabeth to Avontuur line.
