a Di with a northbound freight train at Harewood Road, Christchurch, 1968


No, the man at right is not using the dunny, but it's probably one of the old crossing keepers huts that were common in Christchurch.

The church at left is still there, but is a little hidden by vegetation and other development. (Gordon Jory/NRMNZ pic)

  1. Most likely it is a signals equipment box housing the controls for the level crossing. These days they would use a low profile box so that the motorists view of the rail traffic is not obstructed.
