coal trains in West Virginia, September 1938

This loco seems to be a 2-8-0 class H5 of which 26 were built by Alco between 1909 and 1913.

Two photos by Marion Post Wollcott (1910-1990) in the Library of Congress, the first of a Norfolk & Western train travelling alongside the Main Street of Davey, and the second in Osage, on the Scotts Run branch of the Monongahela Railway (MGA), a coal-hauling short line operation in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, jointly controlled (originally) by the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central subsidiary Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Today this is Norfolk Southern territory and the trains still run through Davey. The towns don't look so active now, however.
