tram on the mill bridge, Padova, Italy, 1909

Padova is often called Padua in English.  The historic tramway began in the horse-drawn era in 1883.  On reopening in 1907 with electric trams, the gauge was changed from standard to metre-gauge to allow more room through the narrow streets. This closed in 1954 but a new 10.3 km system opened in 2007.
