a Climax in the King Country

A photo from 1909 of Gamman & Co's Climax geared logging loco which was used to haul felled logs to their sawmill near Ohakune.  After a few years in the arduous conditions, these locos didn't look nearly so smart. Seven Climaxes are known to have been used in NZ, imported 1884-1930; one still exists operational at Shantytown on the West Coast of the South Island.

For lots more, see the book The Era of the Bush Tram in New Zealand.
