Of the 36 RSD-4 locos produced by Alco over 1951-1952, 14 went to the CNJ. They were a 6-axle Co-Co version of the 4-axle Road Switcher or RS units Alco produced for some two decades. They were fitted with turbocharged V12 Four-stroke diesel prime movers rated at 1,600 hp. Units 1603 and 1604 are seen in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1969.
