100 years ago the Gallipoli campaign of WW1 was almost over

It ended after British High Command decided the campaign had been futile and an enormous waste, and withdrawal was the only option.  This took place over 14-19 December 1915.

For those yet to see it, the exhibition in the Te Papa National Museum in Wellington with models from Peter Jackson's Weta Workshops is worthwhile as a quite realistic portrayal of what it was like for the soldiers (which was truly awful).

For details of the troopships, hospital ships and other ships involved in this campaign and in WW1, see the book Voyage to Gallipoli.
