The new theory, which appears to explain why the aircraft's communication systems failed and why the jet diverted off course, conclusively rules out a terrorist motive.
It says that almost 500 lbs [225 kg] of Motorola batteries which were loaded onto the Boeing 777 was linked to the crash on 8 March 2014, which killed all 239 passengers and crew on board.
A Malaysian government report found a fresh shipment of batteries was assembled on 7 March and loaded onto the jet a day later.
But the batteries did not undergo safety checks after assembly and the shipment was not designated as "dangerous goods".
Dr. Victor Ettel, an expert on the science and manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, said shipping the batteries so soon after manufacture was "asking for trouble".
