anti-immigrant party wins the biggest share of the vote in Swiss national election

The anti-immigration Schweizerische Volkspartei (Swiss People's Party or SVP) won the biggest share of the vote, 29.4%, in last Sunday's national parliamentary election, keeping pressure on Bern to introduce quotas on people moving from the European Union.

Immigration of Muslims that have entered the European Union (which Switzerland is not part of) was the central topic for voters amid a rush of "asylum seekers" from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe.
