Melbourne cable tram centenary FDC, 1985

'Cable' tram here means a tram pulled along the street by a cable in the centre under the surface, gripped and released mechanically as needed at stops as per the San Francisco system and the Wellington system as it operated until 1978.

The Melbourne cable system was gradually converted to electricity from trolley poles between 1924 and 1940.
