Luas light rail, Dublin, Ireland

Luas (Irish for speed) is a standard gauge tram / light rail system serving Dublin, the first such system in the decades since the closure of the last of the Dublin tramways. In 2013, the system carried 30.5 million passengers.

There are currently two Luas main lines. The Green Line commenced operations on 30 June 2004, while the Red Line opened on 26 September 2004. Since the initial opening both lines have been extended and "split" into different branches. As of January 2014, the system had 54 stations and 36.5 kilometres (22.7 miles) of service track.

The Luas is operated by Transdev, under contract from the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA). Three extensions to the existing Luas lines have been completed. Construction of a 6 km extension to the Green line to the north city centre and Broombridge (called Luas Cross City during construction), which will link both Green and Red lines, began in June 2013.

The silver Citadis trams were manufactured in La Rochelle by French multinational Alstom and operate at 750 V DC. (wikipedia)
