Union Pacific GP7's, 1970

The GP7, a Bo-Bo type with a two-stroke turbocharged 1,500 hp prime mover built between 1949 and 1954, was the first model in EMD's GP (General Purpose) series of locomotives. The Union Pacific bought 30 of them, of which 3 are seen in Oregon with a mixed train.

  1. First unit is a GP9U turbocharged 2000hp, note the characteristic single exhaust stack of a turbo just behind the airhorns and the lack of rear end paired louvers as on the long hoods of the two trailing GP7's. The middle unit has a steam generator in the shorthood. UP's GP7's were also set to run Long Hood first and carried signal lights in addition to the regular headlights. The GP9 was on the other hand set to run Short Hood first.

The mixed train appears very much to be the Spokane-Hinkle mixed, I shall investigate further.
