The first plaque was unveiled on 4 November 1939 by the then Minister of Works to mark the opening of the Centennial Highway between Plimmerton and Paekakariki which eliminated the hitherto twisting climb over the Pukerua Bay Hill Road. Unfortunately, it and the surrounds do not seem to have received any maintenance since.
The bottom pic shows the road today as part of State Highway One, here with a southbound KiwiRail freight train. However, Steven Joyce will be pleased to know that for every ton that goes over the railway, a few hundred tons must go along the road.
It makes us wonder what commemorative edifice will be installed when the Kapiti Autobahn is complete - perhaps a giant size statue of Steven Joyce at one end and a statue of his leader John Key at the other?
