paquebot 'Viet-Nam' of the Messageries Maritimes, France


Launched on 14 October 1951 at La Ciotat, this was the first of three sister ships, with the Laos and the Cambodge (all French colonies in Indochina at the time).  The ship was used until 1976 when she was broken up in Taiwan.

Length: 162.1 metres (532 ft)
Breadth: 22 metres (72 ft)
GRT: 12,200 then 13,473 after 1961
Displacement: 15,240 tonnes
Passengers: 117 first class, 110 second, 52 third, 260 "rationnaires" (dormitory?) until 1961, then the places for third and rationnaires were replaced by 240 places for third in cabins.
Propulsion: Two steam turbines by CEM Parsons heated by three oil fired boilers, type Penhoet P41
Output: 24,000 hp
Speed: 23 knots in trials
