early car seat belt


This pic showing a lap belt probably dates from the late 1950s. They became common about 1960, but it was not compulsory for new cars to have them in the U.S. until 1968. Even so it was not compulsory to wear them until the 1980s.  The lap belt was replaced by the 3-point belt in the 1960s.
