the road to Herodium


A name which features in biblical history, this hill fortress 5 km (3.1 miles) southeast of Bethlehem, in the Judean desert (the West Bank) was built by King Herod (74/73 BC – 4 BC) between 23 and 15 BC, and is where he is believed to have been buried.

Herodium was conquered and destroyed by the Romans in 71 AD. It is 758 metres (2,487 ft) above sea level and the highest peak in the Judean desert.
