This is in the Taupo Botanical Gardens, about half a mile to the south of the present day road. It states that in the 19th century stagecoaches used 5 horses and the journey from there to Taupo took two days. Today it takes about 2 hours by car.
Even for those into historic transport it's the sort of comparison that is hard to appreciate.
