'Bienvenue en Inde française', 18th century

A depiction of a reception involving Joseph-François, Marquis Dupleix (1697–1763), a Gouverneur Général of the French establishment in India. This wasn't as great as it might sound: a mere 510 km², the bulk of it Pondichéry, with a population of a bit under 300,000 in 1936. After Indian independence from Britain in August 1947, the French began a slow departure from their territory also.
