the sailing ship 'Hein Godenwind'

This 3-masted sailing ship or barque was built in St Nazaire, France in 1902 and named Maréschal Suchet.  In 1933 the ship was sold to the German Youth Hostel Association and converted into a floating hostel in Hamburg; the largest such accommodation in the world.

On 25 July 1943 the ship sank at her moorings after an Allied air-raid. The wreck was subsequently raised and used for target practice for the Luftwaffe on 9 February 1944 in the Kurischen Haff.

Dimensions: 2,270 gross register tonnes. Displacement: 4,600 metric tonnes. Length: 86.7 meters.
